NOT EVERYTHING WE BURY STAYS GONE
Some things return.
Not always in the same form, but they return all the same.
This piece is about memory, grief, resilience, and the parts of ourselves we try to leave behind but never truly disappear.
The skull represents mortality and the inevitability of loss. The roots wrapping through and around it symbolize how experience, pain, love, trauma, and memory become intertwined with who we are. Nothing stays buried forever beneath the surface.
Yet above it all, the tree blooms.
The Japanese maple stands alive and vibrant despite growing from decay. In nature, death feeds life. Fallen forests become soil. Rot creates growth. What is buried becomes part of what rises next.
That idea sits at the center of this piece:
we do not move forward by pretending loss never happened. We grow around it.
This design also speaks to the people we carry with us long after they are gone. Friends lost in war. Family no longer here. Relationships, memories, conversations, and versions of ourselves that still surface years later without warning.
Memories have a strange way of returning.
A smell. A song. A season. A place.
Sometimes grief grows quietly beneath the surface for years before reminding us it never fully left.
The falling leaves symbolize impermanence and the passage of time. Things leave us. People leave us. Seasons change. But roots remember.
In bonsai, exposed roots are not flaws. They are evidence of endurance, struggle, and survival over time. This piece carries that same philosophy.
“Not Everything We Bury Stays Gone” is about accepting that some memories and scars remain part of us forever. The goal is not erasure. The goal is learning how to continue growing anyway.
